I am not your personal slave and Kansas underwater

I hate that family members think that when they request something I can drop everything and go do whatever it is that I ask. I've been having this problem with one particular family at work for about a week now. We have mount sheets where we paste new telephone orders from the doctors, and they hold about ten. Over the past week, this patient has filled up one and a half sheets. Thats just in med changes and lab requests. This woman is so doped up on Tylenol, it's no wonder she is having all sorts of problems. The family just does not understand this fact, overdosing on Tylenol will not help their mother with her pain. Also, the family seems to think that she is about to go. On Sunday they told me they wanted me to give her whatever Tylenol she needs to keep her comfortable until she goes. In my opinion this woman is not close to her time and still has a while left to live. I feel bad for this lady's doctor as well. The kids have gotten ahold of the doctor's home phone number and are calling her whenever we tell them we can't do something because we don't have an order. The nice thing about her is that she calls me back personally when I leave a message with her nurse. Most doctor's give an order to their nurse and then the nurse calls me back and relays the order. This doctor is different and very nice. I may even have to use her for my family doctor since I don't have one yet. (Let's just hope she takes my new work insurance.)

You may have heard in the past few days about all the rain we've gotten here in Kansas. While not as damaging as Ike in Texas we did have some flooding. My mom and I tried to go to Target a few minutes from my house and couldn't even get in the parking lot. I've included a picture of the flooding here, unfortunately I couldn't find one of the lake by my house where the trees were underwater. The water levels are just now starting to recede, the trees are still underwater but the bike trail is now passable. And I haven't tried to go to Target yet, but I will tomorrow and we'll see how it goes. Luckily our house didn't flood but some other people weren't so lucky. A nursing home a few miles away from me had to evacuate and put al their residents in a hotel. Even a few residents from my work had flooding in their apartments. Only one person died in the floods though and he was trying to drive through high water in the middle of the storm. It's a good thing these things don't happen often, the last big flood apparently was ten years ago on Halloween. Hopefully it will be another ten years till the next flood.

I *personally* would not use a doctor that I deal with at work as my own PCP. It just seems a little too blurred of a line, but that is just me. However, I would ask for a referral to someone she suggests.

As for Kansas being underwater, go figure! I never would have guessed there was enough water to drown all that wheat. And for all the bitching I do about the rain here, at least it doesn't flood the state. I don't think I could handle it if Starbucks floated away.
